The following information about radon gas has been gathered from Health Canada, the Interior Health Authority and the national health coalition Take Action on Radon.

Radon is a naturally occurring gas found in the ground throughout the world. It is a colourless, odourless, radioactive gas that has been identified as the #1 environmental cancer-causing agent. Most buildings will contain some amount of radon gas, however, the only way to know if levels are high is to conduct a radon test.

Take Action on Radon is a national initiative, funded by Health Canada, to bring together radon stakeholders and raise awareness on radon across Canada. This year, the City of Vernon is taking part in the Radon Test Kit Challenge.

Thanks to the support of Take Action on Radon and Coldwell Banker Four Seasons Real Estate, the City of Vernon has a total of 200 free radon test kits to distribute to Vernon residents on a first come, first served basis.

UPDATE: Due to overwhelming public response, the 200 free test kits have been spoken for. A waiting list is now being established in case kits become available. Alternatively, a total of 50 test kits are available for purchase, for a total of $20 each (payable by cash or cheque only).

Click here to sign up for a chance to receive a free test kit. All registrants to the program will receive a link to a free webinar session to take place Tuesday, November 17 at 6:00 p.m. The webinar will provide more information on radon and how to use the test kit. Participants will also be able to ask the experts questions about radon gas and the program.
