Peanut Pool

Introduction

The Lakeview Wading Pool (a.k.a. The Peanut Pool for its iconic peanut shape) and its washroom facilities are in need of an upgrade! The City of Vernon is pleased to announce it can now move forward with a $3.3-million revitalization project for the Lakeview Wading Pool, after receiving grant funding from the Canada-British Columbia Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) – Community, Culture and Recreation.

Background

The Lakeview Wading Pool was opened to the public in 1958. The pool has been a great asset to the Greater Vernon region, providing families with a location to build community and cool off on hot summer days. The 61-year-old pool requires a number of upgrades to make it more inviting, sustainable and accessible to users.

The need for upgrades to the pool were identified in both the 2015 Parks Master Plan and the 2018 Recreation Master Plan. In late 2020, the City of Vernon applied for grant funding from the Canada-British Columbia Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) – Community, Culture and Recreation to revitalize the Lakeview Wading Pool. In late April of 2022 the City of Vernon received notification that their application was successful. The joint federal-provincial funding, which totals $1,887,576, will help the City make long awaited upgrades to the pool basin, update the change room, washroom and mechanical room facilities, and enhance the nearby park space with the addition of a small spray park. The revitalization project is intended to increase accessibility for users and make the space more inviting and sustainable for future use by the Greater Vernon community.

Project Details

The project is currently underway with site preparation complete and the pool walls and footings being poured. The new pool and spray park are tentatively scheduled to be commissioned this year and the facility will be ready to open in the Summer of 2024.
