A Recreation Master Plan is being developed for the Greater Vernon area. This includes the City of Vernon, the District of Coldstream, and Areas B (Swan Lake) and C (BX) of the Regional District of North Okanagan. The Master Plan will be used by the municipalities in the area as decisions are made about recreation facilities, active lifestyle opportunities, and recreation services over the next fifteen years.

Recreation involves not just participation in sporting activities but includes other physical, social, intellectual, creative, and spiritual pursuits that enhance individual and community wellbeing.

1. Swimming, kayaking, SUP, hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing, etc
2. Keep a positive frame of mind and good health
3. Trails with better parking & washroom facilities; more open swim times for diving board, rope swing etc. shouldn't have to share the one lap lane with a program - really need 2 lap lanes min.; more general public skate times (skating times lean to much towards hockey) in the afternoon/evenings

1. Cycling, walking and hiking are our primary activities, we also swim at the rec center but have stopped in the last year due to the poor condition of the water quality.
2. We use the multi-use paths pretty much year round for exercise and transportation as my son is in a wheelchair.
3. The continued development of the multi-use paths and a better plan for maintaining them especially in the winter. It is nice that the Kal Tire center is open for walking but if the paths were maintained better in the winter it would open up access for us around the city.

1. Walking, Cycling, Swimming, Hiking, Disc Golf, Yoga, Paddleboarding, Skiing
2. Recreation is both a mode of transportation as well as a leisure activity. Recreation is a way to connect with friends and spend time with family. Recreation is a way I maintain wellness and to connect with my community.
3. Increased protected cycling or multi use pathways (separate from vehicle traffic) that connect to more parts of the City, Covered bicycle parking areas at major parks and recreation destinations, public art in parks and public areas to create cultural links - functional public art, recycling receptacles in public places and parks instead of just garbage cans which sometimes have a place for refundable bottles, seasonal light installations so parks and public spaces can be used later (or earlier) in the season when there is less light during the day, more programming/events in public spaces/parks.

I'm 83 yrs old, a past chair of Advisory Planning, and am too old for much recreational activity. One thing Vernon seriously lacks is a degree of commercial activity along our waterfront. What I would like to see is an integration of waterfront park with some commercial activity - ground and upper floor restaurants, artist studios, etc, even a small hotel, along with a waterfront promenade, and perhaps even a wharf going into the lake with commercial activity as in some UK waterfront cities, possibly with a large, in-lake fountain - something fun to engage all ages. I suggest this would make Vernon unique among small waterfront cities, certainly in BC, and possibly Canada.

Walking, keeps me fit, washrooms. On the plan for Lakeshore, I don't see any washrooms, I must be missing something.

Swimming and taking Aquafit along with the steam and sauna
I do this in the morning and it puts me the right frame of mind for the day
It is important to me for mental, physical and friendship
What is needed is another Recreation Center perhaps an adult only so the one we have now can be dedicated to special needs programs and for children and open swimming.

phillipsbuttrey about 6 years ago

1. walking and resting in Polson Park, going to any of the beach's in Vernon
2. it helps to keep me health and fit as I have a heart condition
3. Before going further it is important that we know what facilities regarding recreation that are going to require major work or replacement within in the 5-10 years are determined and made public so we have an idea of what kind of money is required and if any are planned on be re located where to. I need this to make an informed decision as a taxpayer as to what we need and what we can afford, then plan for the long term.
